LISA MICHL Lisa Michl comes from a strong artistic family. Lisa follows the path of her mothers and grandmothers, who were mostly fibre artists. Born in Right: Lisa Michl, Waterloo I, etching, 76 x 56 cm, POA Samantha Hobson is one of the young artists of the Lockhart River Art Gang in Far North Queensland. Like other artists in the group, she experimented first in printmaking following the opening of the community Art and Culture Centre in early 1997. Shortly after, she attracted national attention for her powerful abstract paintings, often imparting strong social comments. Her work is included in major State and national collections, international and many private collections. FIONA OMEENYOBorn: 1981 Area: Lockhart Language Group: Umpila Fiona is a member of the Lockhart River Art Gang. She lives in this remote north Queensland community and works through their local art centre. Her imagery is based on key stories from the Umpila language group, and they relate to their history, their ancestor spirits, and to their relationship to their land. The most significant of these stories for Fiona is that of the Parrot Sisters and the man Miiku. SILAS HOBSON ROSELLA NAMOK Rosella is another member of the Lockhart River Art Gang. This is a group of young, Aboriginal artists from the east coast area of Cape York. Rosella works with painting and fine art printing, and has recently begun experimenting with sculpture. Her paintings are very contemporary in style, and she depicts her own stories about life in her isolated Aboriginal community, about the people around her, how they live and the things they do. She also paints about the country in Lockhart River and the influences of the weather there. Rosella spends a lot of time with the senior women at Lockhart. The younger generation aren't as interested in the traditional laws and cultural influences, so Rosella is incorporating many of these aspects of her community history into her paintings, such as the Kaapay and Kuyan moiety stories, to prevent them from being lost forever. While only a young artist, Rosella's work is included in numerous national and international collections. Her work is often viewed as taking Aboriginal art in a new direction, linking the traditional with the modern.
