    LISA MICHL
    Born: 1977
    Area: Cairns, Queensland
    Group: Kokoberrin

Lisa Michl comes from a strong artistic family. Lisa follows the path of her mothers and grandmothers, who were mostly fibre artists. Born in Cairns to the Kokoberrin people, she first learnt about her people from her grandmother Ivy Edwards. Inspired by her grandmother’s stories and life, she began to learn about her people and found her place as a Kokoberrin person. Her interest in her people and culture led her to follow in the footsteps of her brother Shaun Edwards Kalk to become a graduate of the Banggu Minjanni Art Centre. In the last 5 years Lisa has exhibited in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Washington and New York. Collectors of her work include the Queensland Art Gallery, German Australian Embassy, institutional bodies and many private owners.

    SAMANTHA HOBSON
    Born: 1981
Area: Cairns and Lockhart River, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland

    Language Group: Kuuku ’Yau

Samantha Hobson is one of the young artists of the Lockhart River Art Gang in Far North Queensland. Like other artists in the group, she experimented first in printmaking following the opening of the community Art and Culture Centre in early 1997. Shortly after, she attracted national attention for her powerful abstract paintings, often imparting strong social comments. Her work is included in major State and national collections, international and many private collections.

    FIONA OMEENYO
    Born: 1981
Area: Lockhart River, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland
    Language Group: Umpila

Fiona is a member of the Lockhart River Art Gang. She lives in this remote north Queensland community and works through their local art centre. Her imagery is based on key stories from the Umpila language group, and they relate to their history, their ancestor spirits, and to their relationship to their land. The most significant of these stories for Fiona is that of the Parrot Sisters and the man Miiku.

    SILAS HOBSON
    Born: 1978
Area: Lockhart River, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland
Language Group: Kuuku ‘yau / Wuthathi

Silas Hobson is another member of the Lockhart River Art Gang whose works have become increasingly collectable. His paintings are a contemporary response to the traditional culture and isolation of his community. He is also an avid football player and enjoys hunting and fishing.

    ROSELLA NAMOK
    Born: 1979
Area: Lockhart River, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland
    Language Group: Aangkum

Rosella is another member of the Lockhart River Art Gang. This is a group of young, Aboriginal artists from the east coast area of Cape York. Rosella works with painting and fine art printing, and has recently begun experimenting with sculpture. Her paintings are very contemporary in style, and she depicts her own stories about life in her isolated Aboriginal community, about the people around her, how they live and the things they do. She also paints about the country in Lockhart River and the influences of the weather there. Rosella spends a lot of time with the senior women at Lockhart. The younger generation aren't as interested in the traditional laws and cultural influences, so Rosella is incorporating many of these aspects of her community history into her paintings, such as the Kaapay and Kuyan moiety stories, to prevent them from being lost forever. While only a young artist, Rosella's work is included in numerous national and international collections. Her work is often viewed as taking Aboriginal art in a new direction, linking the traditional with the modern.

    VERONICA COLLINS
    Area: Griffith, New South Wales
    Language Group: Wiradjuri

Veronica has been painting for over ten years, developing a distinct approach to the landscape in her mixed media works through the incorporation of sand and acrylic paint on canvas. Her artworks focus on Creation and Dreaming stories and her love of Country. Sections of strong colour dominate, intercut by clean, crisp lines forming tight coils or spirals. Her linear designs are also defined by tiny dots which vibrate within and around more solid shapes. Veronica’s strong compositions reflect the full character and scope of her Wiradjuri country: its brown earth, green lands, grey skies, golden fields, dusky dawns and  summer sunsets. Her tactile geometric patterning and delicate application of sand, acrylic and mixed media reveals an intimate relationship with Griffith and its surrounding country.
